Customizing Password Requirements
Passify's default settings generate great passwords that should work in most instances. There may be cases however where you must customize Generator rules in order to accommodate a specific set of password requirements.
As modifying your Generator rules will result in different passwords being generated, when possible it is best to adjust rules immediately after creating a Generator.
New Generator
If you've just created a Generator and/or haven't used any of its passwords, you can freely adjust the rules as needed.
Existing Generator
If you need to adjust rules for a Generator whose passwords have already been used, you may want to write down the current password before proceeding.
Alternatively, you can simply keep the existing Generator, create a new Generator and adjust the rules for the new one. This will allow you to retain your old password history. You can then delete the old Generator when it is no longer needed.
Unique Character Set Requirements
Sometimes Passify is unable to automatically create the necessary Character Sets to accommodate password requirements. In these instances, you will need to create a custom Character Set based on the rules outlined by the web site or service you are logging into.
This can be tricky as many sites unfortunately do not inform you of password requirements until you provide a password that doesn't meet them.
Example Scenario
Let's take a look at the steps required for creating a Generator that meets a complex set of password requirements.
- Length: 8-20
- One uppercase character
- One lowercase character
- One digit
- One symbol, but only allowed are !@#$%^&*
- No duplicate characters
- No more than 1 consecutive set of characters
Setting up rules for generating passwords that meet these requirements is relatively simple:
- Create the new Generator (we've named ours "Example") and tap the "Edit" button once it appears.
- It is recommended to always use the longest password possible and in this case, that means adjusting the Length slider to 20.
Tap the Character list and assign only the following pre-defined character sets to our Generator:
- Alpha Lowercase
- Alpha Uppercase
- Numbers
- Since the pre-defined Symbols character sets contains more characters than this scenario allows, we can't use any of the pre-defined Symbol Character Sets. Instead, we need to create a custom Symbols Character Set. Tap the "+" button on the top of the Character Sets list to create one.
- In the "Name" field, we'll enter a name for this custom Character Set. It's helpful to reference the Generator that the set is for, so we'll call it "Symbols (Example)."
- In the Characters field, enter the allowed symbols !@#$%^&* defined by our password requirements.
- Tap the "Save" button. Make sure the new Character Set is assigned to our Generator (indicated by a check-mark) and then tap the "< Back" button.
- Adjust the duplicate characters slider all the way to the left to disallow any duplicates.
- Adjust the consecutive characters slider to the number 1.
- Tap the "Save" button to finish and save our Generator.
